A Future City Pattern of Communication

Enabled by face recognition, brain-link technologies, and voice cloning technologies:

  • Brain-readers or subvocalizations create text, which is spoken using a cloned voice or put into someone’s earbuds
    • Imagine different channels where people just speak their thoughts aloud to multiple people around them
  • Face recognition gives instant context about a person, letting strangers connect

Long-term I think this area is going to get eaten by Facebook. They have people’s digital presence (Instagram, Facebook), face pictures, and wearables (AR glasses).

Mutual Context and Presentation

What’s difficult between two new people without mutual context is that you spend multiple minutes just trying to figure something out. And many connections are missed because people are hesitant to talk to strangers without some definite topic.

Social Media is a presentation of self at scale. A presentation is that you have some evidence of a person’s future performance from past performance, like if you went to school together with them.

However, you still have to connect manually and look at people’s pages. Perhaps we will have AI-enhanced connection where just by “having a presence” puts you out there on the global stage of people.

Maybe a repomix for online presence is needed? No idea how images would go into it though.

There are technologies tapping into this idea. Long term I feel Meta still has a persistent advantage.

Voice Speakers

You could speak in another language. Subvocalize what you want to say, AI translates it, plays it out loud.

Or scare people by not physically talking.

Long-term

It’ll lead to greater stratification rather than just connection though. The internet made more like people connect.

There will be a greater demand for privacy because of randoms connecting.

Furthermore, this pattern of connection may be tenuous. Real-world connection based on shared history is better considering our existing mental architecture and in fields that are small people should know each other by name innately.

It’s hard to say what will happen for sure because some effects are emergent.
